Marriage is an institution that has formed the foundation of families throughout history. However, the traditions that surround marriage ceremonies, choosing a marriage partner, as well as the obligations and rights of marriage differ from one culture to another. This paper examined the Marriage culture in Akpo community. For more clarification of the topic, it was broken down into chapters. Chapter one introduced the concept to be discussed as well as its early origin. Chapter two deals on Marriage culture in Akpo community, its location and historical background while chapter three concludes the topic discussed.
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
Marriage is a basic institution in every society. It is the recognized social institution, not only for establishing and maintaining the family, but also for creating and sustaining the ties of kinship (Nukunya, 1994). It is an institution in which interpersonal relationship; usually intimate and sexual are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture. Such a union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks’ its beginning is usually called a wedding and the marital structure created is known as wedlock.
People marry for many reasons which, most often include one or more of the following; Legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual and religious. Other reasons might include arranged marriages, family obligations, and the legal protection of children and public declaration of love. Marriage applies to the association of husband and wife with reference to the importance of the companionship for each of them (Gallagher, 2002).
In all marriages there is a legally and socially approved sexual relationship between the parties involved and normally, it has to be between opposite sexes for the purpose of procreation and companionship (Westermarck, 1992). According to De Burger (1997) Marriage is a socially sanctioned relationship between men and women potentially enduring beyond the birth of offsprings.
Marriage is described as a partnership contract without an escape clause by Denga, 1986). This means that marriage ideally should be a life-long agreement between couples. All inclusive, marriage is one noticeable result of positive and quiet human relations and associations after some time. A cultural norm codifies acceptable conduct in society; it serves as guideline for behavior, dress, language, and demeanor in a situation, which serves as a template for expectations in a social group.
